Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is one of the earliest known spices. The Cinnamon tree is native to Sri Lanka. The botanical name zeylanicum is derived from the former name of the island, “Ceylon”.
In Sinhala, Cinnamon is known as “kurundu”, in English cinnamon, German zimt which has been derived from Latin, which in turn is a loan from Greek kinnamon or kinnamomon meaning ‘sweet bark’.
